WordPress 3.0 is here!

So, today, June 17, 2010, you probably logged into your WordPress site and saw the notification:

WordPress 3.0 “Thelonious” is here! Now you can have a single site and use BuddyPress or use multi-installations of WordPress on one install. For some, this is epic. Now WordPress is one entity instead of split into WordPress and WordPress Mu. This does something awesome – makes it convenient and easy to install a social community like BuddyPress.

For me, I have been excited about this project since hearing about it the first time. (Your fault Matt and my fave core developers – making me wait all that time for it…lol…jk.) I tested it on my own development site, and I know some have even been comfortable to exercise the release candidates for 3.0 on their live sites.

WordPress really has come a long way. Some of the videos I have seen from the most recent WordCamps, on top of the ones I sat in at WordCamp Chicago highlighted some of the versions. Brings back some memories. :)

So, if it is okay with everyone who reads WPAddict… I am going to send a big shout out Thank you to everyone who contributed to making WordPress 3.0 happen. All those countless hours are much appreciated.

WordPress 3.0: Snuffing Out Some Worries

So, the biggest question I get a lot is if WordPress 3.0 will totally mess a person’s site up. After beta testing it on my own server, I can say no.

HOWEVER…

…for those who still are worried, I turned to Andrea Rennick (@andrea_r on Twitter) during WordCamp Chicago 2010 to ask her the same thing and guess what – my own answer was confirmed.

Now, it is the plugins that might be in question, so if you are not sure, ask the plugin developer if they are still actively updating their project. Of course, please be nice about it and do not expect an answer right away. Plugin developers actually do have lives outside of coding (oops – that might have been a little violation of code sacrilege.) Although I would hope most developers would install a beta version of 3.0 to test their plugin, that does not always happen.

Of course, if you are not sure, make sure to check out the WordPress Codex and compare the WordPress functions and filters, and even the loop to what you have.

I almost think this is like the Y2K of WordPress upgrades… but I am not worried – hence, you should not be worried either. Lots of great features in WordPress 3.0. I will be writing up a post soon on it since WordPress RC3 (release candidate 3) is out. :)

What worries do you have about WordPress 3.0?

WordPress 2.8.6 Available!

On November 12, 2009, WordPress released version 2.8.6. These fix several security issues with the WordPress.

One was a cross-site scripting issue or known as XSS for Press This. Normally with the press this function in your WordPress admin panel you can bookmark and publish your favorites to your site. What was happening was that hackers could infiltrate through this area and inject malicious scripts onto your published pages.

The other issue is an exploit of the Apache configurations of the server.

This only brings WordPress closer to 2.9 version release. You can download and upgrade WordPress 2.8.6 manually or for those who have not already noticed at the top of their WordPress administration panels the notice that an upgrade is available with one click.
